We have been busy working at the farm during every spare moment this spring. We are only a couple of weeks into the season, but it is time for farming! We have plowed a huge field that so far has peas, lettuce, kale, and spinach planted with the peas and kale already up and happy. This weekend we planted a separate potato patch with 50 pounds of Kennebec and Yukon Gold potatoes. The next big project? Besides planting, the next couple of weekends bring the building of a new chicken coop and goat house along with the fencing that keeps those animals near their houses! We would love all the building help we can get! If you would like to help build, let us know – we can figure out a time that works best for all and we will even feed you!

Well, technically, they aren’t “in the ground.” They are in some potting soil and seed starting mix in little cups in a tray in the mini-hoophouse Thomas and I built today. I must say, the highpoint of my day was building a mini-hoophouse with my sweet and very helpful four-year-old!

We found plans for it at The Door Garden – http://doorgarden.com/03/plastic-tunnel-cold-frame-row-cover. We made a few changes to the plan to suit our yard, materials, building experience (I built it with a four year old as opposed to Joe building it with a ten year old!) and, I must say, it turned out pretty good! And, now, it is nice a toasty in there and I was able to move the seed starting supplies outside along with the mess that tends to come with starting lots of seeds. We have moist and toasty celery, lettuce, and kale seeds waiting to sprout. Tomorrow, we will add broccoli to the mix.

It seems that all of nature is getting ready for spring and we are busy, too! We are putting the final touches on our fall class schedule, filling up the last few spots in our camps, and getting ready for a big spring planting! The celery seeds are the first to start and they will be planted indoors this weekend. The potato patch will be plowed at the beginning of March to get it ready for planting time. Snow peas and sugar snap peas are the first things in the ground and we will be planting them in a couple of weeks. Things are moving along!
